The Glory of a Man!
Basket of Figs, December, 2008
“What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?” (Ps 30:9)
“To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.” (Ps 30:12)
First: The First Duty of the Tongue is to Praise the Lord.
The Tongue Is the Glory, or the Shame of a Man. The tongue must not be neutral in the matter of praise. We are to speak of His glory and His grace. Silence is treason against the Lord. Jesus said that if we denied Him he would deny us; if we confessed Him he would confess us. The difference between going to heaven and going to hell is in the confession of the tongue and faith in the heart. In all the ages of the church faithful believers have been known as confessors.
The Words of the Mouth Reveal the Condition of the Heart. Jesus said “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Mt 12:34-37)
The Righteousness of God is Given to Those Who Confess Christ. No greater statement of man’s wickedness has ever been made that that made by the Lord Jesus, “Ye would not come to me that you might have life.” Only a most wicked heart would turn away from the beauty of the Lord Jesus. This is the reason that the Apostle John would write, “He that hath the Son hath life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” It is shameful to deny the Lord Jesus, and leads to hell if there is no repentance.
“After that I was turned, I repented; and after that I I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.” (Jer 31:19)
Praise Is Natural for the Sons of God. “So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations.” (Ps 79:13)
“Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” (Isa 43:7) “Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” (Isa 43:10)
So Man Is at His Finest, When from the Heart He Praises God and Loves the Lord Jesus Christ. “What good is my blood, shall dust praise thee? Shall it declare your truth?” God is not the God of the dead but of the living. You must be alive to praise God and be a witness to His truth. God has highly exalted Jesus Christ His Son and has purposed that every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God. This cannot fail unless Omnipotence can be thrown from His throne in Heaven. The dead shall be raised for man was created for the glory of God and must live to speak His glory.
Second: The Second Duty of the Tongue is to Speak Truth
The Glory of God Demands That We Speak The Truth with Our Neighbor. If a man trades in deception and lies, how will His praise of God be believed? Our words of praise will have the stench of death about them, hollow and empty. Can sweet water and bitter water come out of the same mouth; can you praise God and curse men? Who will believe you when you praise the Lord, when you trade in lies and deceit every day? Will filth cause men to believe?
Silence in the Truth Is Also Treason against The Lord. It is the Lord that created the heavens and the earth and brings everything to pass by His powerful word. Any deception about His reality is treason against His kingdom. We are to love the truth and bear faithful witness:
“If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?” (Pr 24:11-12)
“A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.” (Pr 14:5)
The Ninth Commandment Forbids False Witness and Is the Key to True Leadership. What good man will follow those who lie? True pastors and elders are those who speak the truth and bear faithful witness. A lying tongue shall not stand before the Lord, because the man with the lying tongue does not accept the reality that God has created. Like Satan to Eve, he tries to convince others that God does not know the nature of the true world. It is emphatically NOT true that you can change reality by changing your perception of reality. Reality is what it is; the liar would seduce you to distort things and pretend things are not what they are. He distorts words, ideas, things, events, people, places, and qualities to build his own dream which he erects for his own ends, either to escape some fear or to acquire something that is not his.
The Liar Deeply Wrongs Those Who Follow Him. The liar constantly bumps into reality and makes life miserable for himself and for those who listen to him, or for those who love him. His lies cause his loved ones and friends to make decisions contrary to reality, with great harm to them. This is especially true of those who lie about God.
Every man must face this fundamental truth: the God of the Bible is the only true and living God. Jesus Christ is His Son, the only Savior of the world. “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.” (1Jo 2:22)
The Worst of Sins Is Committed by The Tongue. The tongue is a world of iniquity and is set on fire of hell, James says. The fires of hell smolder in the hearts of the wicked and break out into detestable things spoken about God and men. No cosmetics will change this reality. The tongue can only be cleansed by the cleansing of the heart.
“Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they he used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:” (Ro 3:13-14)
“Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” (Mt 12:31)
This is the reason that the Psalmist prayed:
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Ps 19:14) “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” (Ps 141:3) “My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.” (Ps 119:171)
The Person Who Sees No Problem with The Lying Tongue Is Not to Be Trusted. “Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.” (Pr 4:24)
This is the reason that our trust must be in God alone. All men are naturally liars and their words and ways are not to be depended upon. “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” (Ps 118:8)
“Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” (Ps 40:4 AV)
